About Consider the Lilies

I am a patent attorney, not a humanities professor. I am not particularly well versed in music, art, or literature. This publication, Consider the Lilies, does not presume to provide any sort of authoritative teaching about the works discussed, but is rather an expression of wonder by an amateur—in the fullest sense of the word, as someone in love with these things—at the best that Western civilization has to offer.

I intend to think out loud, and without hesitation, about the important questions tackled by our greatest writers and artists. This includes the relationship between God and man, as that is a constant preocuppation in the greatest of works. Indeed, it is while reaching toward something greater than themselves that men accomplish works of great beauty that are worth preservation; such works tend to direct glory toward the great Creator rather than their individual creators.

I wrote “liberal arts” in the subtitle of this newsletter in order to allow myself to veer beyond the humanities and into the natural sciences on occasion, should the inspiration to do so arise.
